Jeanette Aw denies relationship with Joshua Ang
MediaCorp actress Jeanette Aw has shot down rumours of a relationship with former MediaCorp actor Joshua Ang.
In a Sunday report on Chinese daily Lianhe Wanbao, a member of the public who claimed to be a Ang’s friend called in to let the cat out of the bag.
The source mentioned that the couple have been dating for a year and that Ang does not want the relationship to go public. Aw, who shot to fame in 2008 Chinese hit drama series “The Little Nyonya” is 31, while Ang is 10 years her junior.
The source also added that the pair would often meet up during late nights on online game World of Warcraft due to Aw’s busy schedule.
However, in an interview with The New Paper on Tuesday, Aw said although she did meet up with Ang for dinner on several occasions and also played World of Warcraft, she denied being in a relationship with him.
Instead, she admitted she was seeing someone who is not in showbiz but that it was definitely not Ang. She declined to elaborate more on her partner. However, she said reports of a dalliance with Ang are “bizarre”.
“It’s so bizarre. I really don’t know why these things are being said about us,” she was quoted as saying.
According to the Wanbao report, the source said Ang indulged his lady love with expensive meals at Swissotel Equinox and other trendy restaurants, and spends around S$3,000 a month on her.
Ang, who left MediaCorp in July this year to focus on his recycling business, even reportedly booked a private room at the Equinox in order to keep their meet-ups private from the media’s watchful eyes.
However, Aw said, “It’s ridiculous. I have the ability to support myself and I don’t need someone to spend $3,000 on me.”
When contacted by Wanbao, Ang – the former child star from I Not Stupid fame — also denied the rumours immediately.
He gave a straight “No” when asked if he and Aw were in a relationship; whether he really spends S$3,000 a month on her; and if they really met up frequently on World of Warcraft.
He also denied the original report’s cliams that he earns $20,000 a month.
“This is nonsense. My conscience is clear. I’m 21, I don’t earn that much,” he was quoted as saying on TNP.
Aw also spoke to Channel News Asia, where she also denied being “romantically involved” with Ang.
“We are just friends who get along very well. I’ve always treated him as a younger brother and dote on him,” Aw said.
The actress, who played Ang’s older sister in Channel 8 drama serial New Beginnings earlier this year, declared that they only started building up their friendship after the filming ended as they discovered that they could get along well.
She went on to downplay rumours of a May-December relationship and said her partner’s maturity is the main criteria on her checklist.
“I can then depend on him and be able to confide in him. Hence, I’m more acceptable of a relationship with a much older guy,” she laughed.
However, she added that she would not avoid Ang because of the rumours.
In an earlier interview with Yahoo! Singapore earlier this year, Aw also said that as she gets older, the “ideal checklist” for her dream guy gets ever shorter.
“I would like someone who is romantic and preferably someone who doesn’t know who I am. He has to be humourous, faithful and someone I can rely on for the rest of my life.”
